 | India is often held up as a globalization success story. Since the 1980's, the country has experienced unprecedented growth and poverty has dropped by 10 percent in the last decade.
Despite these impressive achievements, the poorest of the poor in India have been left behind by this growth. The most vulnerable groups—tribal people and dalits ("untouchables" in the Hindu caste system)—continue to struggle day after day just to survive.
Since 2002, NetAid World Schoolhouse partner Sanghamitra Service Society has worked successfully to make the future brighter for the most marginalized children in Andhra Pradesh, India, ensuring that no child is denied the chance to go to school.
Through working directly with parents and teachers, and reaching out to students who have dropped out of school, Sanghamitra has worked with NetAid to ensure that children from all levels of society have the chance to get a quality education. Getting more kids in school has been complemented with teacher training to improve the quality of education.
The effort has been incredibly successful—meeting 100% of its objectives. A total of 13,903 students have benefited from Sanghamitra's efforts, and over 14,000 community members including teachers, parents and government officials have participated in related activities.
At the outset of 2006, Sanghamitra is initiating a second phase of activities: improving the education of the children of fisher folk. The organization will focus on five villages in Kruthivennu revenue block with the goal of increasing test-passing rates by 35% for 360 children.
As with past projects, community participation and teacher training are essential components in this effort, which will help families give children with the tools and resources they need to succeed in school, and in life.
